Standard 7 highlights the importance of professional learning, reminding educators to continually grow, reflect, and adapt to meet the needs of our students and communities. It’s about staying curious, open, and committed to being the best teacher you can be.

Teaching is a dynamic profession—new research, technologies, and ideas are always emerging. Whether it’s attending workshops, pursuing advanced education, or collaborating with colleagues, professional learning helps teachers keep their skills sharp and their practices fresh.

I was fortunate enough to take part in multiple Professional development and district-wide information sessions during my practicums. As society changes, we as educators must stay informed about these changes to ensure our practices are up-to-date to best support our students. One of the most interesting district-wide sessions was about the use of AI in schools. It is a tool students are reliant upon, and figuring out how we can promote effective (and safe) use of the technology is something I feel quite passionate about. I came out of the session feeling more informed and with a better understanding of how I can support students with this tech.

Professional learning isn’t just about formal training. It’s also about reflecting on your experiences in the classroom. What’s working? What’s not? Great teachers take time to ask these questions and seek out solutions, whether it’s trying a new teaching strategy, adjusting lesson plans, or seeking feedback from peers.

At its core, Standard 7 is about leading by example. When teachers commit to learning, we can show our students that growth doesn’t stop after graduation—it’s a lifelong journey. By staying curious, engaged, and willing to adapt, educators ensure they’re always giving their best to their students.
