Standard 2 reminds educators to act ethically and uphold the integrity, credibility, and reputation of the profession. This is about doing what’s right, even when it’s not easy, and showing the kind of character that earns trust and respect from students, families, and the community.
Being ethical starts with honesty and fairness. Teachers treat everyone with respect, ensuring their decisions are fair and that they’re putting the students’ best interests first. They follow rules and policies, but more importantly, they think about what’s right and wrong in every situation.
This standard also means being professional. Teachers understand that they’re role models, both inside and outside the classroom. Whether they’re posting on social media, talking to parents, or collaborating with colleagues, they represent the teaching profession. Acting with integrity means staying true to their values, keeping their word, and showing care and respect in everything they do.
Protecting the reputation of the profession is about more than personal actions. Teachers work hard to maintain trust in the education system. They speak up when something isn’t right, support their peers, and make sure their actions reflect the high standards expected of educators.
In the end, this standard is about creating a foundation of trust. When teachers act ethically and responsibly, they show students and families that they can count on them to not only teach but to guide, support, and inspire. This commitment to integrity is what makes the teaching profession strong and ensures it remains a source of pride.
In my eyes, social media has impacted Standard two. Social media makes every person so accessible and easy to find, and students will make it their life mission to find your social media. That is why, as an educator, all of my accounts are private, I have to accept follow requests, and students cannot see what is on my page. It is an extra boundary/barrier to protect not only myself but my classroom and community.
